THE PROMOTION OF TOURIST ACTIVITY: A SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT POLICY?

The purpose of this article is to analyse he promotion of international tourism as a development strategy for the low -and middle- income economies. The first aim is to provide a critical exploration of the existing literature about the relation between tourism and economic development. This allows us to demonstrate that generalizations are clearly inadequate in this area and that tourism can, indeed, endorse a positive contribution to welfare of the resident population, but only if a range of circumstances apply.
