Introduction to the Energy-Economy-Environment Models: description and applications of the POLES model

The need to analyse issues about economic and environmental sustainability has encouraged the development and use of the so-called E3 models (energy-economy-environment). These models aim to anticipate possible problems in the future, facilitating the search and the analysis of solutions by studying the interactions between the energy, the economic and the environmental sectors. This article introduces the E3 models, explaining their evolution, features, classification, and possible outcomes. As an illustration, the POLES model, one of the most important models used by the European Commission, is described, and it is shown an application of this model within the WETO project (World Energy Technology Outlook).
